Gas Prices Top $6 for a 27th Straight Day, Stanton Clears a Nuisance Fourplex, and OC Cities Push Back on License-Plate Cameras

Gas prices: Average gas prices in Orange County climbed for a 27th consecutive day, reaching $6.012 a gallon (Los Angeles County hit $6.04, with diesel at $8.10). The national average sits far lower at $4.316. Analysts point to Russia's ban on diesel exports, Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries, and the ongoing U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran as key drivers — an unusual surge for a season when prices typically fall.

Stanton demolition: The city of Stanton authorized an additional $37,000 to demolish a vacant fourplex in the Tina Pacific neighborhood that had become a hub for drug use, threats and other criminal activity, on top of a $75,000 contract approved in June. City Manager Hannah Shin-Heydorn cited "numerous complaints from residents regarding concerns for their personal safety, after-hours parties, drug sales, and personal assault," while the city says it is pairing the demolition with continued outreach through Project Homekey and its Navigation Centers.

License-plate camera pushback: Residents in Santa Ana, Fullerton and Costa Mesa are increasingly pushing back on Flock Safety license-plate reader networks, citing privacy concerns and revelations that a Northern California data-sharing hub gave federal immigration authorities access to Santa Ana's camera data despite assurances it wouldn't be shared. Santa Ana Councilwoman Jessie Lopez is calling for a contract review, while Fullerton's council was set to review its program's effectiveness since 2021.

Laguna Hills parking permits: Laguna Hills rolled out a $25-a-year neighborhood parking permit program around Beckenham Park after nearby high-density apartments pushed overflow parking into residential streets. Council members split over whether to extend the restrictions further, with some warning the fix is just "Whac-a-mole" without requiring more parking in new development.
