Supreme Court Blocks Trump's Mail-Ballot Restrictions

The Supreme Court has frozen the Trump administration's attempt to impose new mail-in voting rules—including uniform envelope standards and a requirement that states submit voter lists to a Postal Service portal—just seven weeks before the 2026 midterms. The ruling, issued September 15, lets states run the elections under their existing procedures while the underlying legal fight continues.
U.S. Skips Saudi Strikes on Yemen After Secret Houthi Talks

The Trump administration held secret meetings with Houthi representatives in Oman and declined to join a new round of Saudi-led strikes on Yemen, U.S. officials confirmed. The Houthi delegation reportedly pledged not to target U.S. or Israeli vessels and to honor a 2025 ceasefire, even as President Trump said separately he believes Iran is "reaching out" to end its own war with Washington, though Tehran has not confirmed any outreach.

House Passes Bipartisan "Ratepayer Protection Act" on Data-Center Power Costs

The U.S. House voted 417-3 to pass the Ratepayer Protection Act, aimed at stopping utilities from shifting the soaring electricity costs of AI data centers onto ordinary household ratepayers. The bipartisan bill directs regulators to separate data-center power costs from residential rates, though it leaves states significant discretion in how they implement it.

Trump Administration Moves to Weaken Endangered Species Act Protections

A new internal directive from the Trump administration would reinterpret the Endangered Species Act so that only the intentional killing of a protected animal is punishable, exempting deaths caused incidentally by logging, drilling, construction and other economic activity. Wildlife groups, including the Center for Biological Diversity, called the move one of the broadest rollbacks of the 50-year-old law's enforcement power to date.

House Democrat Places Hold on $2.8 Billion Arms Sale to Israel

Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY), the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has refused to clear a proposed $2.8 billion sale of bombs and munitions to Israel, citing insufficient assurances on civilian protection and compliance with U.S. law. The hold does not kill the sale outright but stalls the formal notification process the administration needs to move forward.
