존 데이비슨 록펠러, 흔히들 철강왕 앤드류 카네기와 함께 록펠러의 이름은 사업가로써 가장 유명하고 가장 성공한 인물로 알려져 있다. 평범한 집안에서 자라왔지만 록펠러, 이후 그는 ‘미국에서 가장 많은 재력을 소유한 사람’ ‘석유왕’으로 불려졌고, 그리고 현재 록펠러를 시조로 한 미국에서의 록펠러 가문의 위치는, 대통령을 2명 배출한 부시 가문과 루즈벨트 가문 그리고 존F케네디를 포함한 유력 정치가들의 집안 케네디 집안의 명성과 어깨를 나란히 하는 미국 명문 집안중 하나이다. 비록 록펠러가 죽은지 80여년이 지났지만, 록펠러 가문과 전설로 남은 그의 이야기는 아직도 유효 하다.

그러나 록펠러가 운영하던 Standard Oil은 헨리 포드가 설립한 Ford, 토머스 에디선이 설림해서 지금까지도 명맥이 유지되고 있는 GE(General Electric)와는 다르게 그 이름을 찾아보기란 쉽지 않다. 하물며 록펠러가 설립한 대학 University of Chicago 조차 과거 건축학계와 현재 전세계 경제학계를 이끌어가며 명성을 날리고 있지만, 과거 미국 석유를 90퍼센트 이상 독점하며 미국 경제를 주무르던 그의 회사 Standard Oil은 현재 쉽게 찾아볼수 있는 이름이 아니다. 자산 가치 $40-60 billion로 전세계 부자 1-2위라는 타이틀을 겨루고 있는 빌게이츠와 워렌 버핏의 재산을 가볍게 뛰어넘는 $700billion(과거 록펠러 자산을 2008년 가치로 변환)를 소유했었던 록펠러, 그가 운영했던 Standard Oil의 운명은 어떻게 됬을까?

석유왕으로 알려진 록펠러는 어린시절을, 부족하지는 않지만 유복하지는 않은, 평범한 집안에서 보냈다. 1839년 미국 동부 뉴욕주에서 태어났지만 록펠러 가족은 1853년 오하이오주로 이사하게 된다.  그리고 오하이오주에서 이사한지 6년째가 되던해, 록펠러 아버지의 투자금을 시작으로 20살의 나이에 사업을 시작하게 된다. 당시 록펠러 아버지는 록펠러에게 사업 투자조건으로 ‘투자금을 자신이 원하는 때 회수받는 조건’을 내걸었다. 비록 록펠러 아버지가 요구하던 조건은 사업가로서는 지키기 어려운 조건이었지만, 록펠러는 상시 아버지의 요구를 상시 만족시키기 위해서 어떠한 노력도 감수했었다고 한다. 그리고 이렇게 길들여진 록펠러의 사업 습관은 이후 신뢰라는 미덕으로 록펠러에게 돌아왔고, 이 미덕은 록펠러가 난관에 부딪힐때마다, 신뢰로 문제를 풀어나가는 능력을 배울수 있게 되었다.

실제로 록펠러의 사업이 탄탄대로인것만은 아니었다. 록펠러가 석유 사업의 가치를 깨닫고 그의 첫번째 정제 공장을 오하이오 클리브렌드에 세우면서 정유업에 본격적으로 투자할 무렵, 록펠러는 동업자였던 클라크와 의견 대립이 생기면서 클라크로부터 기업을 매입하기로 결정한다. 록펠러는 당시 경매로 당시 약 7만 달라라는 거금으로 회사를 매입하지만, 20대에 지나지 않은 록펠러가 그 많은 자산을 갖고 있을리는 만무하였다. 그러나 그가 갖고있던 명성과 신용과 신뢰로 이만한 거금을 빌릴수 있었고, 이후 록펠러 자신이 회고한대로 이 날은 ‘그의 앞날이 정해진 날’이 되었다.
 
그의 능력밖의 막대한 빚으로 시작된 석유 사업이었고 첫해 회사의 부채는 10만 달러를 넘어갔지만, 그는 막 태동하는 석유 산업에서 생존하기 위해서는 무리해서라도 확장해야 된다고 믿고있었기 때문에 빚을 감내하고서라도 사업을 확장하였다. 다행히도 큰 무리없이 사업 확장에 성공하였고 이후 매년 배로 증가하는 영업 이익을 누리게 된다.

1870년대 록펠러는 회사 운영에 좀더 합리적이고 경제적인 효과를 기대하기 위해서 Standard Oil Company Ohio (혹은 Ohio Corporation)를 설립한다. 그리고 이후 오하이오 주에 존재했던 경쟁 회사들을 하나씩 하나씩 구입하기 시작하여 결국엔 오하이오에 있는 거의 모든 정제 공장들을 소유하게 되고, 이처럼 오하이오주의 거의 모든 석유를 독점할 수 있는 위치가 되자, 그는 당시 교통수단의 중심이었던 철도와의 협상을 할수 있는 지역 사업가의 위치까지 도달하게 된다. 이렇게 오하이오 주에서 나오는 막대한 자본력과 미국 전지역에 자신의 석유를 싸게 공급할수 있는 이동수단이라는 두가지의 든든한 무기를 갖춘 록펠러는 본격적으로 미국 석유 산업에 진출할수 있는 교두보를 마련한 록펠러는 미국에서 가장 촉망받고, 유망한 젊은 사업가가 된다.

하지만 이후 록펠러의 행보는 석유왕으로 요약되는 미국 석유 시장의 지배, 당시 미국을 지배하던, 아니 당시 철학사상을 지배하던 자유주의에 위배되는 엄청난 사업을 추진하기 시작한다. 오하이오 주에서 성공한 록펠러는 오하이오주에서 성공한 방법을 다른주에서 사용하는 방식으로 총 9개의 주의 석유 시장을 지배하였는데, 각주에 Standard Oil을 설립 하여 독과점으로 석유시장을 장악하였다. 그리고 록펠러는 그 자신은 9개의 석유 기업을 총 관리 하는 거대 사업체-Standard Oil Trust-을 운영하였다(이 거대 사업체라는 개념의 Business Trust는 대한민국의 재벌기업이라는 개념과 거의 비슷하다고 생각하면 된다). 즉, 록펠라가 세운 기업체가 국가의 경제를 좌지 우지 할수 있는 위치까지 올라서게 된것이다. 놀라울 정도로 급성장한 Standard Oil은 더 공격적으로 사업을 확장을 하였고, 이때부터 이에 반감을 갖는 사람들이 하나둘 나타나기 시작하였다.
 
록펠러와 록펠러가 이룩해낸 거대 기업체 Standard Oil이 현대 사회와 당시 미국 사회에 끼친 충격과 영향력은 엄청난데, 이는 케임브릿지의 교수이자 철학자인 버트란드 러셀의 말을 통해서 요약할수있다.

1890년을 전후로 미국 정계는 너무나 거대해진 록펠러의 Standard Oil Trust에 대해 천천히 압박을 걸어오기 시작한다. 특히 록펠러의 사업 전초기지였던 오하이오 주는 Standard Oil이 독과점이라는 판결을 내리게 되는데, 이미 각기 다른 9개의 주에 Standard Oil이라는 기업체를 갖고 있던 록펠러는 특정 주에 존재하는 회사의 재산을 다른 주로 옮기는 편법을 부리며 이후 몇십년 간 더 문제 없이 뉴 저지를 기점으로 한 Standard Oil Trust를 운영을 계속하였다. 
 
하지만 9개의 주에서 거대한 사업을 벌이고 갖은 부당한 방법으로 미국의 법을 요리조리 회피하던 록펠러를 가만히 지켜만 보기만할 미국 연방 정부가 아니었다. 1890년에 국회에서 통과된 Sherman Antitrust Act(반trust, 굳이 한국 상황에 맞게 번역하자면 반재벌법) 법안의 효력으로 1911년 록펠러가 지배하던 9개의 Standard Oil은 철저하게 분리되어 버린다.

물론 2012년 현재 Standard Oil의 이름으로 명맥을 유지하고 있는 회사는 없지만, 미국 기업 리스트에서 그 명맥을 찾을수가 있다.
 
Standard Oil of New Jersey은 Esso(=S.O Standard Oil의 이니셜)로 이름을 바꾸고 또 Exxon으로 이름을 바꾸었다.  Standard Oil of New York은 이후에 Mobil로 바꾸었고 이 두회사가 다시 합병해서 만들어진게 ExxonMobil, 즉 액손모빌이다. ExxonMobil, Chevron, BP 모두 전세계적으로 손가락에 뽑히는 회사인데, ExxonMobil과 BP는 미국 소매 시장을 장악하다시피 한 월마트의 수익을 뛰어넘는 영업실적을 갖고있다.

이렇게 석유왕이라고 불리었던 록펠러의 Standard Oil은 반독과점법과 Sherman Antitrust Act에 의해서 무너지게 된다.
 
 
이후 록펠러는 자신이 과거에 지나왔던 행보와는 다르게 자선에 힘을쓰는데, 그 자신이 진실한 침례교도 였을까? 미국 정부의 압박이 두려워서 였을까? 아니면 자신의 이미지의 변환이 필요해서 였을까? 그 진실은 록펠러 자신만이 알겠지만, 어찌하였든 이후로 록펠러는 1890년을 기점으로 막대한 재산을 사회에 환원하기 시작한다. 지금 시점에서 본다면, 워렌버핏과 빌게이츠의 재산 기부와 같이 너무 당연한 이야기인듯 싶지만, 록펠러가 활동하던 시기는 1880- 1920년대로, 수정자본주의라던가 있는자의 기부라는 개념이 지금처럼 확립하기 전의 시기였다. 이때를 기점으로 록펠러는 여러방면으로 사회에 기부를 하였는데, 그중에서 가장 유명한 사례를 들어본다면 지금 뉴욕에 있는 록펠러 대학(The Rockefeller University)과 시카고 대학(University of Chicago) 이다. 모두 록펠러의 막대한 기부로 시작된 미국의 명문 대학으로, 특히 시카고 대학은 세계 경제학계에서는 절대 빼놓을수 없는 경제학의 상징이 된 유서깊은 대학으로 널리 알려져 있다. 1892년 설립된 시카고 대학은 록펠러가 자신이 죽기 전까지 $80million$(당시 가치)를 지속적으로 기부하였고, 이외에도 록펠러 자선단체(Rockefeller Foundation), 록펠러 대학(The Rockefeller University)등에 당시 자산 가치 $500million(현재에도 엄청난 금액인데 과거에 가치는..)에 달하는 막대한 재산을 기부하였다.
